O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton in Illinois and graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. Prior to moving into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. Her career O'Grady began her career as the model of Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent character in ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Also, she appeared on a number of other shows as well as appeared in made-for TV and independent films. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC police comedy NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady was the large-haired secretariat from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series together with the ensemble.
